I could not believe I was waking up at this beautiful place . Outside every window is a magnificent view and it is so peaceful. It felt lovely to lie in (as per Hilary’s instructions) and take my time ambling down to breakfast. She greeted me with her lovely warm face, apron on , long brown hair tied to the side in a plait . I sat and had the most delicious breakfast , although at this point I was getting the first signs of tummy ache …. After breakfast I was able to sit on the terrace…

I Can Walk For Miles Climbing Over Stiles! (For you Charlotte!) Today was a 12 mile walk to the busy town of Kirkby Stephen. The weather today was forecast as thunder , lightening and rain . As I walk out of Orton I can see the sky changing to black . I waterproofed myself as best I could and wore my waterproof map carrier around my neck for the first time . This was fantastic except when the wind got hold of it, spun it round my neck 3 times and nearly garrotted me. The walk began…

The sun was out and it was glorious ! T-shirt weather for the walk out of Bampton . It was a lovely walk back through the tiny village to Burnbanks, where we had turned off the path for Bampton, and to pick the coast to coast path back up. Rolling hills and fields, laneways covered in flowers made it a gorgeous walk. I am so glad I stayed in Bampton and didn’t walk straight to Shap yesterday . Bampton doesn’t have the tourist crowds of Grasmere but it is such an unspoilt village and it looks like nothing…

Today has been an unbelievable walk out of Patterdale. 12 and a half miles and up to Kidsty Pike, the highest point on the whole coast to coast walk. (2,560 feet) a lot of up and a lot of down … Aaahhh!!! It has been an emotional day for me . The first tear shed as I turned back after a big climb up to Angle Tarn to see the fells of the Lake District behind me. I leave them behind me today, heading towards the Yorkshire Dales. I didn’t realise how sad I would feel to end this…

The beautiful woods around Patterdale Ooooh … look Simon, our new house ! Down comes the mist – no Helvellyn or St Sunday to be seen The rain starts in the silence of Griesdale Tarn In awe … again Walking away from Grasmere Excuse me ladies …. My obsession with drystone walls continues !

Today is the shortest walk on my walk, at only 8 miles . There are 3 options to the route , up to climb Helvellyn (one of my Dad’s favourites when he was climbing) , or St Sunday Crag or the Griesdale Valley route. The choice of which one can only be made on the day as it all depends on the weather. It looked bright at 6am but by the time my breakfast at The Swan was done it had clouded over slightly. I kept my fingers crossed though as I headed out of Grasmere and up…
